"The Birthday Boys" is a scripted original sketch comedy, executive produced by Bob Odenkirk ("Breaking Bad", "Mr. Show") and Ben Stiller ("The Secret Life of Walter Mitty", "Zoolander"). The series features the Los Angeles comedy group of the same name (UCB Theatre Los Angeles, Just for Laughs Festival) along with Odenkirk and is in the classic vein of absurd/silly/smart/funny variety shows ("Mr. Show", Monty Python), featuring sketches that twist real-life moments and cultural touchstones.

Returning from a business trip, toy salesman Simon Scott is caught attempting to smuggle a wristwatch bought for his wife's birthday through Customs. He is arrested and, due to a bungled defence by his solicitor, obliged to serve a three-month prison sentence. It is only the beginning of his woes; his employer, Colonel Wilson, is understanding, but he is ultimately forced to sack Simon, who discovers that finding another job under such circumstances is extremely difficult. But Colonel Wilson is determined to help his former employee find a solution.

The following year, veteran detective Hwang Joon-cheol is newly appointed as the head of Crime Investigation Division. He receives a tip about the real culprits and embarks on a reinvestigation to clear the boys' names. However, the interference of the detective responsible for the case at the time, Choi Woo-sung, leads to everything falling apart, and Hwang is demoted. Sixteen years later, the sole witness of the case and daughter of the victim, Yoon Mi-sook, and the boys return to Hwang, seeking justice...
